Energy Companies Obligation OR ECO4 for short

The Energy Company Obligation (ECO) is a ground-breaking government initiative in Great Britain that’s changing lives and protecting the planet! Its mission? To tackle fuel poverty head-on while slashing carbon emissions, making homes warmer, greener, and more affordable for those who need it most.

How does ECO work? The Boring Bit!

The ECO scheme is an exciting initiative that puts the power of change in the hands of medium and large energy suppliers through the Home Heating Cost Reduction Obligation (HHCRO). This means these suppliers are tasked with making a real difference by helping low-income, fuel-poor, and vulnerable households heat their homes more efficiently. From installing top-notch insulation to upgrading outdated heating systems, these measures are designed to cut energy usage and lower bills. What’s more, each supplier is given a share of this important mission based on their slice of the domestic gas and electricity market, ensuring a united effort for a warmer, greener future!

Who is the scheme for?

Almost anyone in the UK. It all comes down to 2 things fundamentally;

1. Does the property need any efficiency improvements

2. Does the homeowner, Tenant or someone that lives in the household either claim any income related benefits, have a low income or have a health condition that is affected by the cold.

When Eco Begin?

The energy companies obligation began on 1st June 2013 replacing the Carbon Emissions Reduction Target (CERT) and Community Energy Savings Programme (CESP), which both ended in 2012.

Since 2013, the ECO schemes have facilitated over 3.1 million energy-saving home improvements across the UK. Delivering delivered impressive environmental benefits. Since their launch, these programs, combined with related initiatives like the Green Deal, have achieved an estimated 60 million metric tons of CO2 lifetime savings. On average, a single mature tree can sequester approximately 22 kg (0.022 metric tons) per year. So you would need 248 million trees per year for t

These improvements not only help families cut down on energy bills but also advance the UK’s broader climate goals, creating a ripple effect of environmental and social benefits. If scaled further, these schemes have the potential to transform energy consumption patterns across the country.
